Wilbur J Cook, fondly known as Bill, departed our world on May 6, 2025. Born on August 19, 1944, in Raymond, WA, he was a humble, funny, reliable, and loving soul who touched the lives of all who knew him. Wilbur, or "Willy" as we often called him, was a man who lived his life with purpose and unwavering love for his family and the beauty of the great outdoors. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children…to leave the world a better place…to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Wilbur succeeded in all of this and so much more.
In his early life, Wilbur was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 and endured 3 tours in Vietnam being discharged in 1971.
He then moved around Washington, living in places like Longbeach, Westport, Raymond, and Montesano before settling in Centralia for his last five years. He was a skilled in building repair and plumbing as well as auto repair by trade, owning his own business until his retirement in 2000. Despite his professional accomplishments, Wilbur was always a humble man. His reliability was legendary, always there for anyone who needed a helping hand. He was widely known for his sense of humor, often lightening the mood with his funny and heartwarming anecdotes. Wilbur loved the outdoors. He spent countless hours fishing, hunting, and restoring old automobiles, a hobby that allowed him to combine his love for mechanics and creativity.
Wilbur was a fighter in all aspects of life. He achieved 65 years of sobriety and 55 years of being smoke-free, a testament to his strength and determination. Wilbur was very generous with his time, often volunteering to help others in their time of need. His dedication to health was unwavering, and he always made sure to remind us of the importance of taking care of ourselves. Above all, Wilbur cherished his family. He leaves behind his loving daughter, Gina Prost, and son in law Robert Prost, his X-wife Susan Cook and his sisters, Sally Hoeck, Joyce Musser, Trisha Wakefield, and his nieces Tina, Saralyn, LeiLoni and Marina and nephews Daniel, Phillip, Brian, Dewayne and Trevor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Georgia Cook, his two brothers Roy Cook and Charles Cook, all whom Wilbur cared for in their last days, and his sister Joanne Clark.
As Gina, his daughter, I invite you to remember Wilbur for his loving nature, his dedication to his family, and his love for life. I encourage you to leave memories and upload photos to the memorial page, to celebrate the life of a man who was loved by many and will be greatly missed. As we say goodbye to Wilbur, let us remember the words of Emily Dickinson, "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality." Wilbur's love will continue to live in our hearts and memories forever.
