Obituary

Pauline (Polly) Ruth Garland, 91, of Centralia, passed away at Providence Hospital July 10, 2012. Pauline was born Oct. 4, 1920 in Centralia to Carl & Florence Dickey. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Maxine Houghton, Celesta Curtis, Velda Workman, and her brother, Robert Dickey. After graduating from Centralia High, Pauline was a student at the University of Washington, graduating with a degree in Home Economics, she met Frank Garland while at the University. They were married Aug. 30, 1942 leaving for Memphis, Tenn., where Frank was stationed in the U.S. Navy. While they were in Memphis, Pauline served on the Anderson Kortrick Cotton Brokers Commissions for 3 A years. Once Frank completed his duty in the United States Navy they made their home in Centralia and Frank became a partner at Eubanks Glass, a family owned business and spent many years assisting with the business, sewing awnings for businesses in town. Polly served as secretary to the Community Development for City of Centralia, and volunteered on the committee for the juvenile court, this committee determined the consequence for the juvenile offenders. She was well known for her times as a Girl Scout leader, and Boy Scout den mother. At all family and social picnics her carrot cake & lasagna were legendary. Polly was a long time member of the United Methodist Church, the Centralia, Chehalis and Gig Harbor Emblem Club. She spent many hours knitting sweaters for her girls and made the most beautiful dresses. In 1984 Frank became the national president of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, for the next year they traveled across the United States. While in office, Frank & Pauline traveled to all 50 states, Puerto Rico & Panama. After his year of service they continued to travel with Elkdom and both were involved in charitable programs of the order. Because of Pauline's commitment to her community and the order of Elks, the Washington State Elks now grant the Polly Garland Award to women that give back to their community and local Elks lodges. Polly was instrumental in creating the 2nd Chance Scholarship (Dorothy Yothers) which is given each year at the Washington State Elks Convention. They still found time to travel to South America to visit their exchange student and made several trips to Asia over the years. Frank & Pauline had four children, Jim Garland (deceased) wife Janis of Centralia, Judy Lyon (Al) of Centralia, Kathy Kambich (Jim) of Chehalis & Randy Garland (Sherri) of Centralia. They have nine grandchildren, one grandchild preceded her in death & 15 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday July 21, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, 506 S.
