Obituary

Maureen was born in 1919, to Duane and Jane Esget in Lily, S.D., growing up with six brothers and one sister. She passed away on Nov. 24, 2012 at home with her loving family, at the age of 92. Her husband, Marvin Smith, of 52 years, preceded her in death in 1993. She graduated at 18, from Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, S.D., teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. Marvin and Maureen owned and operated the Scatter Creek Grocery and Gas Station near Tenino, Wash., for many years. She worked for Rome Supply Company from 1962-1971 and Grange Supply in Chehalis from 1971-1982 where she retired. She loved to fish, garden, read, work crossword puzzles, play cards, travel, write poetry, research family history and spend time with family and friends. Maureen spent over 30 years as a volunteer for Centralia Food Bank, Rochester Lions Club and Swede Hall. She is survived by three daughters, Sandy (Benny) May of Tumwater, Wash., Judy (Roy Snyder) Morehouse of Rochester, Wash., and Lori (Jim) Thornton of Santa Fe, N.M., grandchildren, Tanya Hahn of Galvin, Wash., Machel (Clay) Garlepied of Monroe, Mich., Jamin (Amanda) May of Tumwater, Wash., and Taron (Sondra) Hahn of Rochester, Wash., and 10 great-grandchildren. Maureen requested no service be held. A family memorial will be held at a later date. She requested donations be sent to Children's Hosptial, 4800 Sandpoint Way NE, PO Box 5371 MS CL-04, Seattle, WA 98105.
