On May 31, 2014, Mary Louella Alfredson (Grace, Lind, and Carlson) passed away peacefully from her home in Centralia, WA to her eternal home with the Lord. Mary was born May 22, 1932 on the farm above Oakville, WA, to Carl and Maybelle (Torrin) Alfredson. Her parents, her sister, Lois Smith, her brothers, Vernon and Marvin Alfredson, son, Larry Grace, and grandson Robert Warner preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters Catherine (Gerald) Warner, Camille (Ray) Haskins, Lynn (Don) Rota and son Jim (Marcia) Grace, her grandchildren, Michael Ayers, Christopher Ayers, Mark Grace, Joshua Grace, Tracy Pendleton, Cody Warner, Zachary Haskins, Jeff Haskins, Connor Haskins, Dylan Haskins, and 18 great grandchildren.
Mary married Robert Grace in 1949 and graduated Valedictorian from Oakville High School in 1950. After Robert's death on May 31, 1958 she attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington. She settled in Elma, Washington, where she met and married Donald Lind. They moved to Hunter's Prarie where Camille was born. Five years later they moved to Quinault where the family resided for another five years. They moved to the Lind family farm on Garrard Creek out of Rochester, Washington. Mary and Don moved to Centralia, Washington where Mary kept the books for their logging business. After Don's death in 1991, Mary met and married Vern Carlson of Tenino, Washington. They spent five years at their home on Military Road outside of Tenino and traveling throughout the state visiting family, friends and seeing the sights.
Mom spent her time raising her family, her vegetable and flower gardens and creating hand crocheted gifts and denim quilts. Many a baby was welcomed into this world with one of her crochet baby afghans and her grandchildren slept peacefully knowing their loving Grammy had tucked them in with her denim quilts created specifically for them. The family said Mary had the greenest thumb of us all. Her African violets were her pride and joy.
In Quinault, she was a member of the Community Association and became a sheriff's deputy matron so that the community teen dances would have a female chaperone. As her children grew mom ferried them in the big old Ford station wagon to vacations around the Olympic Peninsula, Scout meetings, sports activities and church. She cheered us on and taught us to love the Lord. She established a chapter of Survivors of Suicide and co-founded the Saints Alive Chapter. She held various positions within the Lutheran church where she raised her children in the Christian faith. Mom's strength was her faith in God and it could be seen in her daily walk and most of the time without words. Mom's church home at the time of her passing was Immanuel Lutheran Church, Paul Hermansen, Pastor, 1209 N. Scheuber Rd. in Centralia.
Donations can be made to the Mary and Martha Circle at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1209 N. Scheuber Rd., Centralia, WA 09531 or The Salvation Army Centralia Corps at PO Box 488, Centralia, WA 98531.
