Maridel Viola
Voetberg
Jun 5, 1938 — Sep 19, 2026
Maridel Viola Voetberg, lovingly known as Marde, passed away peacefully Sept. 19, 2026, at the age of 88, nine years to the date of her beloved husband's passing.
Born June 5, 1938, in Centralia, Washington, Maridel was raised in the community she called home. After high school, she began working as a telephone operator. It was during those years that she met her husband, Leon. Leon affectionately gave her the nickname "Marde," a name that stayed with her throughout her life.
Marde and Leon shared 60 years of marriage, building a life filled with family, adventure, hard work and countless memories. Together, they raised three children and created a loving family that grew to include 20 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren (and counting).
Marde was a woman who embraced life and found joy in many different adventures. She and Leon spent many happy hours timber cruising together, and they loved boating out of their marina, Pleasant Harbor Marina. She also enjoyed spending winters in Borrego Springs, creating special memories with Leon and their family.
Throughout her life, Marde was known for her warmth, generosity and willingness to help others. She owned and operated Marde's White Elephant Hamburger Stand, where she became a familiar and beloved face in the community. She also worked as a real estate agent, helping others find places to call home.
One of the accomplishments she was especially proud of was her volunteer work with children with special needs. Her dedication and compassion were recognized when she was honored as Washington state Citizen of the Year. Her willingness to give her time and care to others reflected the kind of person she was.
Above all, Marde cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life was woven into the lives of generations. She leaves behind a legacy and family memories that will continue to be treasured.
Marde was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Vance Voetberg. She is survived by her sister, Nita Martin; her children, Leon Vance "Skip" Voetberg Jr., Joseph Lee Voetberg and Leah Lynn Merklinghaus; as well as all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will be holding a private service to honor Marde.
