Hazel Gillingham, 96, of Centralia, Wash., passed away Feb. 10, 2013 at Colonial Residence in Centralia. She was born to O.M. and Lena Jones on Aug. 18, 1916, in Enumclaw, Wash. The family moved from Enumclaw and she grew up in Little Rock and Centralia. She loved golfing, bowling, fishing, clam digging and oystering. She also loved gardening, picking wild blackberries and mushrooms. She was a fantastic cook, pies being her specialty.
In 1947, she, her husband and brother, Bill Jones, started the Yardbirds in a tent, selling army surplus goods in Centralia on Main Street. Shortly thereafter, they moved the business to a Chehalis location where the Sunbirds now stands. In 1971, they built the new Yardbirds. They ran the successful business until 1975, when they sold to the Pay N Save Corporation.
Hazel is preceded in death by her husband, Richard and siblings, Margaret Campbell, Bill Jones, Minnie Dibley, Dick Jones and Bob Jones.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dixie (Tom) Sturza, Centralia and Beverly Saari, Centralia and Palm Desert, Calif., her six grandchildren, Michael (Mihye) Sturza, Bothell, Wash., Scott (Beth) Sturza, Camas, Wash., Rob (Carol) Sturza, Black Diamond, Wash., Donald Saari, Centralia, Wash., Steve (Lisa) Saari, Benecia, Calif., Krista Saari, Palm Desert, Calif, 11 great-grandchildren and her sister, Jean Stephens, Durham, Ore.
