Obituary

LeRoy Howard Lund, 89, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2015 at his home in Centralia, Washington. During his final days he was surrounded by family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy E. Lund. LeRoy was born February 9, 1926 in Vancouver, Washington to Elizabeth and Irving Lund. His mother passed away when he was a child and stepmother Mabel Lund played a key role in his life as well. After graduating from Ft. Vancouver High School in 1944, he served our country in World War II as a radio operator flying reconnaissance missions in Italy. Following his honorable discharge, he graduated from the University of Washington with an undergraduate in Education and later went on to obtain his Masters Degree in Education from Western Washington University. He married Dorothy on April 12, 1952 in Petersburg, Alaska where he took his first teaching job. LeRoy and Dorothy were married for 48 years. They moved to Centralia in 1954 where LeRoy started as a teacher at Galvin School, and later moved on to Administration. He loved working with young people and savored every chance to be in the classroom or on the playground where he could be with the kids. He ended his career in 1981 as the Centralia Junior High Principal. LeRoy's love of sports shone through as he started the intramurals program at the Junior High. As a father, teacher and administrator, he positively affected and shaped the lives of many young people. He was especially proud of the many accomplishments of his students, his children, and his grandchildren. LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, brothers Harold and Delbert, and sister Anna who died at birth. He was a member of St. John's and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and also a long-time member of the Elks, Lions Club and American Legion. LeRoy enjoyed people and developed and nurtured life-long friendships wherever he went. He enjoyed card games, fishing, and was an avid golfer. The family is grateful for the loving care that he received from the staff at Colonial Residence in Centralia. They are also thankful for the personalized care he received from Kim Talley, and from Providence Hospice in his final days. LeRoy is survived by his daughter Natasha Koiv of Beaverton, Oregon and her children Mikael Koiv of Tualatin, Oregon and Alexis and her husband AJ Michaud of Beaverton, Oregon; son Bruce and his wife Nancy of Olympia, Washington; and son Brian and his wife Toni and their children Kathryn and Alexander of Des Moines, Washington; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services for LeRoy will be held at Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary on Tuesday April 7, 2015 at 1:00 PM. Newell-Hoerling's is located at 205 W. Pine Street, Centralia, WA 98531. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at Riverside Golf Club, Chehalis WA on Tuesday immediately following the service. Visitation may be made at Newell-Hoerling's on Monday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, and Tuesday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.
