Kenneth Lewis Alan

Kenneth Lewis Alan passed away August 25, 2026 in Rochester, WA at the age of 92. He was born April 2, 1934 to Lowell and Margaret (Berg) Smith in Tacoma, WA, birth name Kenneth Lane Smith.

A fifth generation Washingtonian, Ken enjoyed spending time with his large extended family. He was especially fond of his Grandfather Selah Lewis Smith.

A top marksman, PFC Kenneth Lane Smith served as Lt. Vehicle Driver with the US Army in post Korea Germany, and later stateside as a reservist, earning a Good Conduct Medal.

Ken had a strong work ethic. A jack of all trades, he found employment as a logger, truck driver, mechanic, carpenter, excavator and builder. He was a Maintenance Specialist with Ellensburg WSDOT. In his off time he could be found farming, remodeling, building and working his Rochester and Ellensburg properties.

Ken enjoyed socializing, was quick witted and enjoyed a good laugh. In his later years he walked miles to meet daily with his morning breakfast friends. Ken loved his hashbrowns, bacon and eggs, little wild blackberry pie and maple nut ice cream.

In 1959 Ken married Carol Erickson. The majority of their married years were spent between Rochester and Ellensburg. They separated in 1987. Ken then lived in Portland, OR before moving to Fruitland, ID. Carol died in 2022. Ken returned to his Rochester property in 2023 where he lived until his death.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Tazzalyn Lewis, his son Allmon Smith and his sister Barbara Hansen.

Ken is survived by his children Kathie Roberts of Benton City, Jeanne Lewis of Oak Harbor, Suzie, Doyle, Merlie Smith of Rochester, Mitchell (Bobbi) Smith of Oakville and Kevin Smith of Kelso; grandchildren James (Elisabeth) Roberts of Medical Lake, Amanda (Adam) Sherrill of Lenexa, KS, Mikayla (Colton) Rhoades of Oakville and Maleaha (Riley) Heck of Centralia; great granddaughter Gabriela Roberts; and brother-in-law Howard (Colleen) Hansen of Anchorage, AK.

Burial Service and interment Tahoma National Cemetery September 24, 2026, 9:30 AM PDT. Newell-Hoerlings Centralia is handling arrangements.
