Obituary

James Alton Shultz III Jr., known to his family as Jay and to others as Jim, passed away on February 26, 2025. He was born to James Shultz II and the late Patricia Jones Shultz on August 2, 1958, in Olympia, Washington. James, a smart and charismatic individual, spent most of his life in Washington, residing in Tenino, Seattle, New London Connecticut, and Edmonds. He moved back to Tenino where he was a gifted football and baseball player, and graduated from Tenino Highschool. He then entered the U.S. Navy where he was assigned to a aircraft carrier. Upon discharge from the navy he returned to Tenino and married Cathy Harris, his former classmate from High School in 1985. They had one son, Joel. James eventually settled in Rochester. James was a dedicated computer programmer in the technology sector for 20 years. His intelligence and charm were appreciated by his colleagues. Beyond his professional life, James had a deep love for the outdoors, often going on hikes and daytrips to the ocean. He also had a soft spot for sports, he was frequently seen cheering for his favorite teams from the comfort of his home. However, James's remarkable generosity was his most defining trait. He dedicated the last 5 or 6 years of his life to the All Kids Win organization, tirelessly organizing donations and food banks for impoverished children in Thurston County. His unwavering commitment to his community was recognized when he was named Volunteer of the Year by the organization. James is survived by his father James Shultz Jr. (May), Tenino, his son, Dr. Joel Herness a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force, (Emelissa) and his granddaughter Isabel, Berkeley, CA. He is also survived by; his brother, Eric (Rachel) Shultz, Winston Salem NC, and sister Peggy Shultz Tate, Everett WA, and his 6 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Jones Shultz, his brother, Ron D. Shultz, his grandparents, James 'Jim' and Thelma Shultz, as well as his grandparents Ron and Wilma Jones.
