Obituary

Eileen Adele Horner passed away peacefully on August, 5, 2017. She was born at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA to Major Fredrick and Victoria Kraus on November 20, 1924. Eileen grew up on Holmes Island in Olympia and graduated from Olympia High School. She worked as a clerk at Fort Lewis and also for the Office of the Insurance Commissioner in Olympia before being introduced to Sam Horner, a cousin of one of her roommates. Eileen and Sam were married on September 28, 1946. If you asked her, Eileen would probably have said she was "just" a housewife but, in fact, she was a very busy lady. Her part time and occasional jobs included giving piano lessons; working part time at the CenPly (now TwinStar) Credit Union; hosting membership events at local banks; collecting information for the Census; staffing our precinct polling place during elections; serving on the Election Board; representing the businesses in Centralia as the Welcome Wagon Lady and directing the Children's Choir at the First Christian Church. Eileen was always interested in acquiring new skills and spent her free time learning about cooking, gardening, flower arranging, macrame, ceramics, calligraphy, crocheting, knitting, crewel and needlepoint. She loved music and volunteered for March of Dimes, Community Concert and at Providence Centralia Hospital as well as taking turns at being both a Girl Scout and a Boy Scout leader. Eileen and Sam traveled internationally several times including a visit to Sam's ancestral home in Cornwall, England. Eileen is preceded in death by her husband, Sam, and her brother, Bill. She is survived by her daughter, Susan; her son, Scott; and her daughter-in-law, Sharon. She has three grandchildren, Gina (Bob), Sam (Chris), Sarah (Tyson) and four great-grandchildren, Paige, Charlie, Wes and Ginger. A Memorial Service will be held at Newell-Hoerling's Chapel on Aug. 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Under the direction of Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary.
