Obituary

Douglas (Doug) Dwight Wangen, a man beloved by so many people, passed away Jan. 22, 2013, at the age of 69. Doug was born in Portland, Ore., on June 24, 1943 and spent most of his growing years in New Rockford, N.D., where he enjoyed a happy, active childhood. One of his fondest childhood memories were times spent working on the family (Pfeiffer) farm near New Rockford, N.D. Doug was proud of the fact that he was named after two World War II generals, Douglas McArthur and Dwight Eisenhower. One of Doug's gifts was the ability to connect with those who came in contact with him. He almost always had a smile on his face and always made those around him comfortable. This gift, despite the physical difficulties he encountered later in his life, was especially inspiring. Doug, as it turned out, was quite the entrepreneur when he opened his own business in 1968. For close to ten years, Doug built canopies titled Ranger Canopy. Even though this business has been closed for 36 years, these sturdy canopies are still occasionally seen in the area. Doug worked as a salesman for various businesses in this area but it was his last job that provided him the most happiness professionally. Doug worked at the Lucky Eagle for 15 years as a blackjack dealer, even starting this position when the Lucky Eagle initially opened. He often stated that he wished he could have started this earlier in his life. Doug and his wife, Bonnie, recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary, January 7th. A ritual they practiced annually was to travel to different destinations on their birthdays in January and June. Many precious memories were created on these trips. Another hobby they both particularly enjoyed was bowling. They enjoyed bowling but both truly relished the friendships that were created with fellow bowlers. Doug had a playful side to him and he enjoyed family gatherings immensely. Each Christmas, after everyone unwrapped their presents, Doug would wad some wrapping paper and initiate a paper fight amongst family members. Soon, it was paper flying everywhere! His physical presence at these gatherings will be missed. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Obert and mother Violet. Doug is survived by five siblings, Richard, Mary, Lawrence (Judy), George, and David. Doug was also a father to five children, Doug (Julia), Kathy, Jennifer (Scott), James, and Lantz. Doug had 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson. A memorial service celebrating Doug's positive impact on family and friends will be held at Oakview Grange on February 2, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a contribution, please mail checks to the Providence Health Care Foundation, Pulmonary Fund, 914 S. Scheuber Rd. Centralia, WA 98531.
