Obituary

Mark Keene was born in Centralia, Washington on May 31st, 1959. Having been born with severe intellectual and physical disabilities, the doctors told his parents to take him home and enjoy the short time they had with him as he would not survive. Not only did Mark survive, but he continued to thrive and surpass all expectations for another 66 years. Most of Mark's life was spent in Centralia where he attended and graduated from school. He worked many years for Reliable Industries until his retirement in 2018. Upon the death of his mother, Sandra, he moved to Redmond, Oregon, where he lived until he passed away from complications related to his disabilities. In his early years his favorite hobbies included running, swimming, rollerskating, bouncing around on his Hoppity Hop and wheeling around on one of his many pedal cars and riding toys. Mark participated in Special Olympics (running, of course!). In later years, he could be found walking along the Dry Canyon in Redmond using a walker with the aid of a guide. Mark also enjoyed shopping, listening to music and audio books, playing his piano, working on sorting activities, swimming, bowling and riding in the cart for a round of golf. Mark's favorite way to spend time was drinking A&W rootbeer or a hot cup of coffee, relaxing in a nice bubble bath, enjoying pizza on Fridays and he could always be found with a plastic spoon in his hand. He had a sunny attitude and made friends everywhere he went. Mark is preceded in death by his Great-Grandparents - Jack & Nellie Nugent; Grandparents - Gene and Dorothea Swanson, Fred and Helen Keene and Ben and Susie Jones; Mother - Sandra Keene and her longtime partner Aleck Fasoulis. Mark is survived by his Father Donald Keene (Karen); Sisters - Carmen Stedham (Ken), Kelly Holding (Jim), Shawna Larson (Bruce); Brothers - Steve Slusher (Dawn) and Keith Keene (Kelcey) and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and their children. A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Centralia, Washington at 10:00am on Friday, August 1st, with a Celebration of Life to be held at Riverside Park (Shelter #2) following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, Mark would prefer donations be made to one of the following agencies: • Hospice of Redmond (https://www.hospiceofredmond.org) • Central Oregon Autism Movement (https://www.centraloregonautismmovement.com/) • Brightside Animal Center (https://brightsideanimals.org/) • Neighbor Impact (https://www.neighborimpact.org/)
