Obituary

Deane Henry Johnson was born on June 10th and passed away peacefully on August 26th surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He lived his life with three things at the center: family, service, and laughter. Deane was born in Marcus, Iowa in 1931. When Deane was just a child, his family moved to Nevis, Minnesota and lived on Lake Belle Taine. He graduated from Nevis High School in 1949. He served two years in the military, where he met Lorna. They were married in 1954 in Nevis. Deane attended and graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. Following graduation he began working for Wright County in Buffalo, Minnesota as an Extension Agent working with 4-H programs. He then moved his family to Moorhead, Minnesota and continued to work with the 4-H program as an agent. Then in 1964, the Johnson's moved to Chehalis and Deane began his career as an agent with Lewis County 4-H programs. Deane received his Master Degree from WSU in 1970. Deane was a founding member of the 4-H/FFA Market Animal Sale. He was the director of the 4-H Camp at Mayfield Lake. He was inducted into the Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame in 2002. He retired in 1990 with over thirty years of service. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was a member of the choir. Deane enjoyed gardening, fishing, baking and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grand children. He was famous for his "Papa Buns", cinnamon rolls and Lefse. Deane is survived by his wife Lorna, children: Doug (Patti) Johnson, Cheryl (Kerry) Vance, and grandchildren, Michael (Jacky) Vance, Sarah (Stead) Halstead, Theresa (Kelly) Hauenstein, David Johnson, Jamie (Steve) Gruenberg, Carla (Ryan) Macedo, Jennifer Walter and Randy (Brandi) Walter and great-grand children Jaden, Samuel and Lucus. His parents Carl and Dorothy Johnson, two infant sons, his sister Dottie Vollman and his brother Dick Johnson, preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Chehalis, Saturday, September 9th, at 11am.
