Obituary

Arthur F. Staeger, known as Joe Staeger to his many friends, passed away at home on Feb. 17, 2013. Joe was born on May 16, 1912 and grew up in the local area. He graduated from Centralia High School in 1930, then went on to Centralia Jr. College, graduating in 1932. He worked at the Chehalis Garage before being drafted into the Army. While on furlough, he was involved in an accident that crippled his left foot. The army reclassified him, barring him from serving overseas. He served the remainder of his tour stateside and was discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant in 1944. During his service, he married his longtime sweetheart, Naomi Bakken. They were together over 60 years, ending in her death in 1995. Joe moved back to Centralia after he was discharged from the military and started work with Willrich Lumber Co., until the lumber company closed. He worked at James Electric after that for 22 years. He learned to fly under the G.I. bill. He became an avid pilot, helping to form the Lewis County Flying Club. Joe was a charter member of the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Joe was actively involved with many organizations, the Centralia-Chehalis Elks Lodge 2435, Chehalis Eagles Lodge, the local Masonic Lodges in Centralia and Chehalis, the York Rite and the Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies, the Afifi Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters in Tacoma & the Order of the Eastern Star in the local area. In 1999, Joe married Lois Doran Sawyer, who was a longtime friend from high school. They were together until Lois' death in 2007. He is survived by his step-son, Jeffrey Sawyer and his wife, Libby. He brought joy & smiles to many, he will be missed.
